NahenaheNet Essays

I can be pretty opinionated about Hawaiian music, and am usually not shy about expressing those opinions.

Where to Buy
Hawaiian Music

We make two recommendations for those interested in purchasing Hawaiian music via the Internet. For the music of Keola Beamer, slack key instructional videos, and koa wood music boxes, order though Keola Beamer's Hawaiian Treasure Chest. For all other music, we highly recommend the Hawaiian Music Island.

nahenahe, vs. Soft, sweet, melodious, as music or a gentle voice.

12/19/97 -

Recording artists Grayden Kelly and Brudda Walta are both starting new album projects, and are both looking for a couple of new original local songs. Send demo cassette & lyric sheet to:

12/12/97 - Keali'i Reichel will be a special guest of Celine Dion at her concerts at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu on February 4 & 5, 1998.

12/8/97 - I just got a note from Dennis Kamakahi, he has a a new website address and a email address. He also has some nice new pictures online.

12/6/97 - I caught Wade and his new co-vocalist, Maila Gibson, at Borders Hilo. I really enjoy Wade's songwriting, its mostly contemporary in style but talks a lot about island life. Maila is a talented and very lovely new singer who you will probably be hearing a lot about in the future.

12/2/97 - Keola Beamer's Hawaiian Treasure Chest has been unable to accept credit card orders via their secure server for a while, but the problem has been rectified. If you would like to order using credit card you can now use the secure server, or the regular server for fax, mail or 800 number orders.

Keola will personally autograph any CD or tape at no extra charge. An excellent gift idea for your Hawaiian music friends!

11/27/97 - Hau'oli La Ho'omaika'i! (Happy Thanksgiving!). I've added some Real Audio samples from Keola Beamers latest CD, Mauna Kea - White Mountain Journal, they are available for listening both on the album page, or on the NahenaheNet Real Audio Showcase.

11/24/97 - I learned too late that Keali'i Reichel was Regis and Kathie Lee's guest today. Does anyone know who may be performing tomorrow, Thursday or Friday? Please email me if you have any info. We already know that Hapa will be Wednesday's special guest.

11/22/97 - I've been working on a site for Sudden Rush that's been coming along nicely, got some Real Audio samples up. Don Kawa'auhau is a Hawaiian language immersion teacher here in Hilo and their manager Kwai-Chang Publico also runs several programs for youth here. As they say, "Like us or don't like us, it doesn't matter. We're still here." And making a difference for the youth of East Hawai'i. Thanks, guys.

11/21/97 - (From Tim Brattan) Hapa will be the special guest on the Regis & Kathie Lee program airing on Wednesday, 11/26/97 (9am PST). They will perform "He'eia" from their new "Surf Madness" release. Break a leg, guys!

11/19/97 - Birthday wishes go out to Uluwehi Guerrero! "Hau'oli la hanau ia 'oe, hau'oli la hanau ia 'oe..."

11/18/97 - Bryan Kessler (formerly of Hawaiian Style Band and many other local recordings) is looking for dedicated students who would like to learn to play guitar. Beginners are welcome, serious inquiries only. All styles and levels. Contact Bryan by e-mail at blk@lava.net or snail mail - Bryan Kessler, P.O. Box 37123 Honolulu Hawaii 96837.

I've been informed that E O Mai debuted last week at #3 on the Billboard World Music Charts, and is at #4 this week. Congrats to Keali'i, Fred and the Punahele Productions gang!

Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom is featured in the cover story of MidWeek Magazine. You go, girl!

11/01/97 - I've been grooving on Kelly Villaverde's new release, Emerald House for the past couple of days, and really enjoying it. Great vocals, production, and all original material! Highlights for me are the first two tracks, Miracle (Out Of The Blue) and Still Yours, written by Kelly and previously recorded by Na Leo Pilimehana. Its "Not Quite Hawaiian", but well produced contemporary music by a local artist. Check it out!

10/23/97 - Mahalo to everyone who joined us for the online release party, especially to Keali'i and Fred for agreeing to do it!

10/21/97 - Keali'i Reichel's new CD, E O Mai, was release on October 21, 1997. In my opinion it is his finest work yet. If you are a Hawaiian music fan you owe it to yourself to get this CD. Auntie Maria is taking orders at The Hawaiian Music Island. We have some Real Audio sound clips online for you to listen to. Check out Keali'i's Homepage for news and updates. Susan Jaworowki's latest Hawaiian Music Report also has some quotes from Keali'i's manager regarding the new release.
