Starbucks Concerts Showcase Island Music

Starbucks celebrates its 10th anniversary in Hawai‘i by staging a four-Island summer concert series. Their just-released commemorative CD, “Mele O Hawaii,” assembles 15 Island tunes performed by local acts, ranging from Keali‘i Reichel, Jake Shimabukuro, Hapa, Israel Kamakawiwo‘ole, Willie K. and Gabby Pahinui. Some artists on the disc (available only at Starbucks stores) will participate in the summer musical blowout. See this Honolulu Advertiser feature for dates and performers.

Kāko‘o ‘Ōiwi Fundraiser, Nov 21

Kāko‘o ‘Ōiwi is a non-profit Native Hawaiian Organization founded in 2006 by Mehana Hind, Kahi Brooks and Kehau Watson after they saw a need in our community to create better networking opportunities and provide administrative support to Native Hawaiian people and organizations.

Kāko‘o ‘Ōiwi is starting its new fundraising program with a concert featuring Ernie Cruz, Jr. and HAPA on Tuesday, November 21, 2006, 6-8 pm at Punahou School. All proceeds from the concert will go to Kāko‘o ‘Ōiwi’s Ola Nā Iwi program which supports projects that protect, promote, and celebrate the Hawaiian lifecycle. You may use the attached form to pre-order a limited number of tickets they have made available. Due to recent events, the deadline has been extended to Friday, Oct 20 (the document says October 18).

Holomua Benefit For UH-Lab Schools Tomorrow

Tickets for Holomua “Moving Ahead” are on sale now for $30 and will be $40 at the door. 100% of all concert ticket sales go to replace instruments that were lost. Ke Ola I Ka Leo

Ke Ānuenue Area Health Education Center presents a night of Hawaiian music and entertainment, featuring Hapa, Skylark, Hula Hālau O Kou Lima Nani Ē, and the Hilo Browns at the UH-Hilo Theater on September 2, 2006 from 5:30 to 8:30PM. There will also be a silent auction at 4PM.

UH Lab School Fundraiser

The UH Lab School holds a back-to-school fundraising concert on Sat., Aug. 19, 6–10 p.m. at the Manoa’s Andrews Amphitheatre. The Holomua (Moving Ahead) Benefit Concert: A Time for Recovery features some of Hawai‘i’s top musicians including HAPA, Na Leo, The Brothers Cazimero and many others. All proceeds from the concert will be used to repair damages caused by the June fire including the school’s performing arts department, the P.E. and weight training room, the UHS Jr. ‘Bows athletic department and the athletic trainer’s office. HAPA brings Hawai‘i to Mission festival

For folks in western Canada, Hapa will bring the music, dance, chant and storytelling of Hawai‘i and the South Pacific to the Mission Folk Music Festival in Fraser River Heritage Park, July 21-23. HAPA performs in the festival’s Saturday evening concert which starts at 7 and is offering a presentation on Hawaiian music and culture on one of the festival’s three day stages at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Ho’okena filled weekend concerts with gems

Ho‘okena, Hapa, Nā Kama, The Brothers Cazimero, Genoa Keawe and many others will be joining the Mākaha Sons at The 4th Anniversary Paradise Yellow Pages “Take A Walk In The Country” on Saturday, June 17, 2006, at the Neal Blaisdell Center Arena. Recent Developments

Things have been hectic around here recently, as a few of you may have noticed. We’ve had the end of the school year, finals, and I had to give the keynote speech at a language and technology conference in Honolulu yesterday. Things should be returning to normal, and I’ll be able to post news items more regularly. Here are a couple of items of note:

The Barefoot Natives CD release is just a few days away, May 23. I previewed one cut on my last podcast, and will have another in this weekend’s podcast. The Barefoot Bash is scheduled for June 11 in Lahaina, and tickets are now available online. In addition to the Barefoot Natives, the Mākaha Sons, Hapa, Gypsy Pacific and Henry Kapono will be performing.

I’ve also learned about an exciting new release which celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Hōkūleʻa. It is entitled “Hōkūle‘a – The Legacy”. I’ve heard cuts from it, and will preview one cut in this weekend’s podcast as well. It features a wide range of talents, composers and performers alike, and is a fitting tribute to the vessel and society that has inspired several generations. The CD will be released in June or July.

I was checking out Kenneth Makuakāne’s Xanga website, and it sounds like he’s making nice progress on his upcoming solo CD.

Investors, musicians, writers, game designers, directors, and producers of performing arts products will benefit from a four-hour seminar from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. followed up by free private consultations on Friday, May 26th at the Maui Research and Technology Center in Kihei. Attorney George Darby and David Fisher of the Small Business Development Center will be going over legal issues that are critical for performing arts businesses in general, and in particular are relevant to taking advantage of Hawaii’s generous tax credits for performing arts products.
