Podcast #34 Translation

Greetings everyone and mahalo for listening to the Nahenahe.net podcast #34. Today is Sunday, March 12, 2006.

I received the preliminary ballot for this year‘s Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards about 10 days ago. In the coming weeks I will be chosing one of the categories and playing music from CDs which are entered in that category. This week I will be playing musit from the “Hawaiian Album of the Year” category, one of my favorites, and many excellent CDs have been entered in this category.

Before doing this, I have great news to announce regarding Aunty Nona Beamer’s release from the hospiotal on O‘ahu. She is recovering on the Island of Maui. Aunty Nona wishes to thank everyone for their letters, cards and kind thought while she was at the hospital. She is also greatful for the donations to the Beamer Hawaiiana Scholarships at Kamehameha Schools. The scholarship fund reached its goal of $70,000. Thanks to everyone for your prayers, kind words and support for Aunty Nona.

So lets listen some songs from the CDs which have been entered in the “Hawaiian Album of the Year” category at Nā Hōkū Hanohano this year, 2006.

It was quite some time ago that I first heard this group, and we waited quite a while before seeing their first release. Here is Holunape, singing “Iā ‘Oe e Ka Lā.”

Play “Iā ‘Oe E Ka Lā”

I will be playing many songs today, my friends, but not talking much except to introduce the groups, singers and instrumentalist. One of my favorite CDs of those released last year was the first CD by Aaron J. Salā, and one reason that l like this CD so much is his piano playing on the CD, it is truly a Hawaiian style of piano playing. So let’s enjoy his piano playing and his singing on “Ka ‘Upu Aloha”.

Play “Ka ‘Upu Aloha”

I hope that some day my daughter will be able to play the piano as well as Aaron on this CD.

At this time I would like to play a song from the latest CD by Ata Damasco, another CD entered in the “Hawaiian Album of the Year” category. This is a famous song which has been recorded many times, entitled Kaimukī Hula, from his CD entitled “Pā‘ina Hou”

Play “Ka ‘Upu Aloha”

I was happy to hear the piano in Ata’s CD as well, and he is also a gifted pianist. You can clearly hear the abundance and quality of the CDs released last year and which are entered in the “Hawaiian Album of the Year” category this year.

Sean Na‘auao is famous for his contemporary recordings, but he has recorded and released more traditional sounding Hawaiian CDs, that is the kind of CD he released laste year entitled “Ka ‘Eha Ke Aloha”, and this song is from that CD, entitled “Ni‘ihau O Kahelelani.”

Play “Ni‘ihau O Kahelelani”

Thanks to Sean for releasing such a wonderful Hawaiian CD, with the hope that he continues to release this kind of CD.

This is going to be the last song I’ll play in this podcast, there are many other CDs entered in the “Hawaiian Album of the Year” category, these however are the only ones that I have permission to play in the podcast. This song is from the second CD release by Kaumakaiwa Kanaka‘ole, entitled Welo, this song is Ke Aka O Ka Li‘ulā.

Here is a complete list of CDs entered in the Hawaiian Album of the Year category. Some I played because I received permission to play them, for the ones I didn’t, I didn’t have permission.
