Podcast #36, 04/23/06, rough translation:
Greetings everyone and mahalo for listening to the Nahenahe.net podcast #36. Today is Sunday, April 23, 2006.
My goodness friends, it’s been so long since I last produced a podcast, nearly a month has past since my last podcast in March. I’ve been extremely busy both at home and at work, and there has been no free time at all for this kind of work. I will strive to do better, and try to return to my normal schedule and produce a podcast every other Sunday.
The big event coming up soon, the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awartds, will be held on May 31 at the Coral Ballroom at the Hilton Hawaiian village. My ballot arrived this past week. There were many incredible Hawaiian music releases produced last year, and it is unbelievably difficult to chose one in most of the categories where Hawaiian singers and groups are entered, such as Male Vocalist, Female Vocalist, Group and so forth. The list of nominees was published by the Honolulu Star Bulletin and the Honolulu Advertiser, so, I did not prepare a separate list for Nahenahe.net. There is a link however pointing to the lists on the Interent, to see the names of all nominees, browse to the Nahenahe.net homepage, and look for the link to the stories posted on the Star-Bulletin and the Advertiser.
The Merrie Monarch hula competition has just finished here in Hilo. As is the norm, we watched from the comfortable seats in our home in ʻŌlaʻa. The dancing each night was exciting, but I was very happy to hear so many young people singing on the evening of the hula ʻauana , and the number of news songs that were danced to by the dancers. Among those performing were Kaumakaiwa Kanakaʻole, Kainani Kahaunaele, Aaron Sala, and the woman whose CD I will be playing for you today, Natalie Ai Kamaʻu.
I will introduce you to Natalie shortly, but first, I will play you a cut from her release, entitled ʻĒ. I will begin by playing the songs that open the CD, a medley of Mahina O Hōkū and Aloha Wau Iā ʻOe.
Play “Mahina O Hōkū/ Aloha Wau Iā ʻOe”
I had heard about Natalie’s release earlier, but had not actually heard it until I received a copy as a present, and I was very happy to hear her sweet voice. So that you know, Natalie is the daughter of Howard and Olana Ai, two famous hula instructors. Natalie herself was select Miss Aloha Hula at the Merrie Monarch several years ago, so it is quite appropriate that I play her music today.
Play “Blossom Nani Hoʻi E”
I would like to thank Natalie and her husband Iolani Kamauʻu for their permission to play this wonderful music in this podcast. Natalie is on the final ballot of this year’s Na Hoku Hanohano Awards in the Album of the Year,Female Vocalist, Hawaiian CD, hoʻopuka ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, a and for the CD cover
To all Nā Hōkū Hanohano voters, if you havenʻt heard this CD yet, do listen to it, and if you vote before you do listen to it, shame on you!
So my friends, I have a pile of work staring at me, so the time has arrived to finish this podcast. Before leaving I will play one more song to play for you
Play “Pili Aloha”
So until we meet again next week, take care.
