Greetings everyone, this is Keola and mahalo for listening to the Nahenahe.net podcast #47. Today is Sunday, October 15, 2006.

Last Saturday I traveled to Kona for the Hawaiian Music Conference sponsored by the Hawai‘i Island Economic Development Board and HARA, and it was wonderful. Four panels discussed Hawaiian music in the areas of haku mele, recording music, the business of music, and promotion of music. Kawaikapuokalani Hewett, Bill Ka‘iwa and Kainani Kahaunaele discussed haku mele, Gaylord Holomalia, Charles Michael Brotman and Sonny Lim discussed recording music, Bill Meyer and Kenneth Makuakane discussed the business and legal aspects of the music industry, and Auntie Maria, Jody Brotman, Tim Mathre and I discussed the promotion of music. Sadly, there were not a lot of attendees, but the presentations were excellent. The conference will be redone on O‘ahu on Saturday, November 11 at the Kapālama Dining Hall of the Kamehameha Schools Campus on November 11. I encourage all members of the recording industry in Hawai‘i to attend this conference as the information presented is incredibly valuable for everyone. I talked about the value of promoting music via the internet, including the use of podcasting to promote your music. There are many Hawaiian musicians who are now allowing their music to be included in podcasting. I talked about how Kenneth Makuakane and chose some of his music and contacted podcasters to let them know we wanted them to play his music in their podcast, and they were very happy to do so. I wrote up a document explaining the new things that he and I did in order to promote his new CD on the Internet, and I will post it online after the November conference.

Since I am talking about Kenneth write now, I will play another cut from his CD “Makuakane”. Although it was officially released on Sept 29, it will not be in wide distribution until this week. I will let you all know when it is available online and in stores.

Play “Hōkūalaka‘i”

I remember the day that Hōkūalaka’i arrived at Hilo One, and from that time I was inspired and wanted to write a song for it. A year later, after beginning to collaborate with Kenneth, I wrote this song, and it tells of Hōkūalaka’i's trip to Hawai‘i island, the captain and sailors, and about the journeys it will take in the years to come. This is one of the songs that Kenneth and I have allowed podcasters to play in their podcasts.

Wow, it’s not even the end of October, but the first Christmas CD of the year has been release, but it is a good one, by the Brother Cazimero. It is entitled “Caz Christmas” and I will play a couple of songs from it when the time is right. Keali’i Reichel is going release his first Christmas CD in November, and a Christmas song that I wrote is going to be on it! I have not heard the CD yet, or even my song, but we all know that everything that Keali’i does is the best, so I am very much looking forward to hearing the whole CD. I am pretty sure he will allow me to include music from his CD when it comes out as well.

At this time I am going to play one more song from the new CD by Kenneth Makuakane, and I also wrote this song. I remember reading a few years about about the extinction of the Po’ouli bird, a native bird on the island of Maui. The last one was captured by biologist with the hope that a mate would be found, alas, the bird died and captivity and no more has been seen since. Here is my song for this bird, sung by Kenneth…

New/Obscure Hawaiian Words:

Here are some terms that I used in the podcast that may be unfamiliar to even Hawaiian speakers. Some are from Māmaka Kaiao, the new lexicon dictionary, and others just infrequently used:

holokai -sailors

ho‘olaulaha – publicize, promote

ho‘omalele – distribute

ho‘omalele laulā – broad distribution

ho‘olele hualono – podcast (this word has not been officially sanctioned by the Lexicon Committe. I created it with the help of some colleagues, and it has been discussed with the committee. However, I need it, so I use it.

pā‘oihana puolo Hawai‘i – Hawai“i music industry

puolo – music (there is no older, established Hawaiian word for music in its sense of instrumental music, melody, harmony and rhythm. This word was coined by the lexicon committee for that. Mele is Hawaiian poetry, the words and thought, but not the melody and accompanying elements)
