Podcast #052 1/7/07, rough translation:
Greetings everyone, this is Keola and mahalo for listening to the Nahenahe.net podcast #51. Today is Sunday, January 7, 2007. Happy new year to everyone, I hope that you enjoyed the Christmas season. Wow, what happened to 2006? Our family returned to Maui during Christmas week to relax and enjoy the company of our friends and family there. Because of some family responsibilities I didn’t see any live music, but did reconnect with some old friends in the music industry there, and am planning for some projects with them. I met with Keola Beamer last weekm and his new CD is almost ready for sale, and I will feature it in my next podcast.
This is a reminder to all members of the Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts about the deadline for entering 2006 releases for the 2007 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. I placed the entry form on the HARA website, so don’t forget that the dealine for entries is January 31. Also, voting for the 2007 Hawai‘i music awards begins on January 15, don’t forget to vote for your favorite releases of 2006.
Nahenahe.net has been featured in issue 12 of PodcastUserMagazine, there is a link to the website on Nahenahe.net. Thanks to Simon Toon for his kind thoughts.
Today’s podcast will feature a lot of music from Maui musicians and singers and I will start with a song from the first release by the group Ahumanu. Its members are Liz “Kopa`a Tita” Morales, Joni DeMello and Aunty Bessie DeMello . Their CD has been released by Ululoa Productions. Here is their singing the traditional song, Ua Noho Au A Kupa.

Their harmonies are really sweet, aren’t they. Mahalo to Ahumanu as well as Jake and Laurie Rohrer for allowing me to include this song.
Before I continue, I would like to remind everyone about the Hawaiian music conference that will be held in Kona on Saturday, January 27 at the Kamehameha Schools Campus on Maui . I encourage all members of the recording industry in Hawai‘i to attend this conference as the information presented is incredibly valuable for everyone. The panels will discuss haku mele, recording your music, business and legal aspects of the music industry as well as promoting music. I will talk again on the panel that discusses promoting your music. For more information, contact Skylark Rossetti (808) 935-2180.
At this time I am going to play a cut from the CD “It’s A Slack Key World” that was produced by Hapa, but features many different Artists. Hapa is Barry Flanagan and Nathan Aweau. Their last CD, Maui, was chosen as the best CD of the year at last year’s Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, and they are the performers on this first cut I will play entitled “Mele Pau’ole”. I will play another cut from this CD at the end of this podcast. Here is “Mele Pau’ole”. Pat Simmons and Pat Simmons, Jr. play along with Hapa folks.

That is not a traditional kind of slack key playing, but is very excellent regardless.
Before I play another song, I want to tell you all about a very interesting song on Raiatea Helm’s MySpace website. She has posted a recording from her upcoming CD, and it is very different than her previous recordings, it is a jazz song. Visit her website to give it a listen. Many Hawai‘i musicians now have MySpace websites to promote their music, so you should go check it out.
I will now play a song from Maui Jam, Al Nip and Jon Toda are the members. I was given their CD by my friend Fulton Tashombe while visiting him on Maui last week. They play traditional songs, and Fulton played piano on some of the songs as well. Here is their performing “Ka Makani Kā‘ili Aloha”, a famous song from the Hāna area on Maui

Thanks to Al, John and Fulton for allowing me to play their music on this podcast. I have one more cut to play this week, from “It’s a Slack Key World” by Hapa folks, and they are joined by Gaylord Holomalia on this. Gaylord is famous for playing piano and synthesizer with Israel Kamakawiwo’ole and Kalapana. This piece is entitled “Slack Key World #2:

So my friends, that is all I have for you this week. Until we meet again next week, take care.
