A trio of new recording acts and a duo of previous Hoku Award winners head the list of nominees for the 1997 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards presented by the Hawai'i Academy of Recording Arts. the 20th annual awards event honoring excellence in the Hawai'i recording industry will take place Tuesday, may 20, 1997 and Wednesday, may 21, 1997 at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel.

The three new acts with the most nominations are:

John Cruz
John, brother of the Ka'au Crater Boy's Ernie Cruz, Jr., has received 7 nominations, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, and Most Promising Artist.

Kekuhi Kanahele
Kekuhi, granddaughter of the legendary Hawaiian scholar, kumu hula, and Na Hoku Hanohano winner Edith Kanaka'ole, has received 6 nominations, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, and Most Promising Artist.

Ehukai
Ehukai, made up of five young men from Hilo, has received 5 nominations, including Group of the Year, Song of the Year, Single of the Year, and Most Promising Artist(s).

Makaha Sons
The Makaha Sons have received 5 nominations, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Group of the Year.

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole
Israel has received 5 nominations, including Album of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, and Island Contemporary Album of the Year.
