These are the results of the 1997 Na Hoku Hanohano Internet Voting Booth. Mahalo nui to all of you who participated. Please remember that the voting was an informal polling of Hawaiian music fans on the Internet, and that these votes do not count toward the actual winner of the award. The winners are determined by voting by eligible members of the Hawai'i Academy of Recording Arts.

Synopis of Results

As can be expected, voting was incredibly close in some categories, and there were a few landslide victories as well. Interesting, there were blank votes in every category.

There were two ties:

Album of The Year
Hahani Mai and In Dis Life outdistanced all other nominees in this catgory

Group Of The Year
Ho'opi'i Brothers and Ehukai. The Makaha Sons followed close behind.

Among the most tightly contested categories were:

Song of The Year
Don't Cry 'Oe managed a come-from-behind victory over Island Style in the final 24 hours of balloting.

Male Vocalist of The Year
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole squeaked by John Cruz for top honors in this category.

Engineering
Kuikawa edged out both In Dis Life and Acoustic Soul in a three way photo finish.

The landslide victors included:

Hawaiian Album of The Year
Hahani Mai led all candidates in this category from the first day of balloting.

Female Vocalist of The Year
Kekuhi Kanahele nearly three times as many votes as fellow East Hawai'i resident Darlene Ahuna.

Comedy Album of The Year
Mary Tunta took no prisoners in claiming victory as Comedy Album of the Year.

Christmas Album of The Year
Dancing Cat Record's compilation, Ki Ho'alu Christmas proved the most popular holiday recording of the year.
