Keali'i Reichel burst upon the Hawaiian music scene with his debut album, Kawaipunahele, back in 1994. What on the surface may appear to be a case of "overnight sucess" is anything but that. Keali'i's years of work and dedication to the perpetuation of Hawaiian language, culture, hula, and chanting led him down the road to stardom. The overwhelming success of his subsequent releases firmly established him as the preeminant Hawaiian artist of the 1990s.
The foundation of Keali'i's knowledge are the lessons he learned from his maternal grandmother, whom he spent countless weekends with as a youth. His education continued as he studied under Peter Day while attending Lahainaluna High School. Later, Keali'i studied under kumu hula and master chanter Pualani Kanaka'ole Kanahele, daughter of the legendary kumu hula and Hawaiian scholar "Aunty" Edith Kanaka'ole. With Pualani's blessing, Keali'i founded his own halau hula (hula school).
Keali'i helped found and was the first director of the Punana Leo o Maui, and later served as director of the Bailey House Museum in Wailuku as well as the Maui Historical Society.
Though touring often takes him to outer islands, the US mainland, and even the Far East, Keali'i's feet stay firmly planted on Maui soil.

Lei Hali'a, or "Lei of Memories," was Keali'i’s second release and contains contemporary Hawaiian music grounded in traditional language and poetry, along with original compositions, chants, and a few familiar english songs. There is something for everyone here.
