I am currently a computer specialist in charge of development of Web versions of all of the Hawaiian language and culture courses taught by Ka Haka 'Ula O Ke'elikolani College of Hawaiian Language at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo. This is being done as part of a federal Title III grant received by UH-Hilo in 2000. I also serve as the leader of the computer technology component of a federal Curriculum, Teacher Training and Recruitement grant that is being jointly administered by the Hale Kuamo'o, the Hawaiian Language Center of Ka Haka 'Ula O Ke'elikolani College of Hawaiian Langauge at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo, and with the 'Aha Punana Leo, Inc.

I was previously Media and Telecommunications Coordinator for the Hale Kuamo'o, and worked in various capacities with the 'Aha Punana Leo, Inc. My responsibilities with Hale Kuamo'o and the 'Aha Punana Leo, Inc. included:

Leoki
I designed and operated Leoki, the first computer BBS (Bulletin Board System) completely implemented in a Native American or Polynesian language. Leoki now has nearly 1,000 Hawaiian language speakers using the system, and is used by schools and offices on all major islands.

Kualono
I also designed and maintained Kualono, the first World-Wide Web server that allowed Hawaiian language to be viewed properly. It has been the focal point of much of our innovations for Hawaiian language and computer telecommunications.

Support
I was also responsible for computer training support and curriculum development staff at Hale Kuamo'o, and at Hawaiian immersion schools and offices around the state.

Curriculum Developement and Teaching
I'm developed a computer application and introductory computer science curriculum in Hawaiian that will be used in the Hawaiian immersions schools at the high school level, in addition to instruction manuals in Hawaiian on the use of Leoki and the Hawaiian language version of AppleWorks.

Speaking of Which...

I've spoken at a number of conferences both in Hawai'i and on the mainland about our efforts to integrate Hawaiian language into our use of technology. These include:
