Ka Manu

11/16/98

I've really enjoyed some recent sessions with Larry Kimura, talking about Hawaiian songwriting, musicians, and Hawaiian music history. He's told me some very interesting things, some of which I'll get into in more detail later.

One that came up today was that the Alice Namakelua did not write one of the most well-known songs that is today attributed to her, Ka Manu. Larry interviewed Alice a number of times in the 60s and 70s, and Alice herself told Larry in one of those interviews that she did not write the song. She learned the song in her youth, and did not know who the author was. Apparently the song has been attributed to her for years (she was likely the first to have recorded it), though she never actually claimed to be the author of the song.

He also revealed some very interesting information into the origins of the song Hi'ilawe, I'll get into that in a few days.
