Susan's Hawaiian Music Page
Aloha mai!
Early January 1997How this page works: every two weeks I list the latest Hawaiian music CD releases, and the Hawaiian music concerts for the ensuing two week period around the world. I also list new concerts that I hear of, no matter when they are, to give those of you out there a "head's up" to get those front row seats. If you're looking for other concerts, or for gigs, you can use the Dakine Online link at the bottom of my page.
Pickings are a little slim this time around, as the big push to make the Na Hoku Hanohano award deadlines has passed, and live concerts are temporarily in abeyance. But fear not: this is the calm before the storm.
I'd like to thank the folks who sent me email in December with their kind comments about this page. I was not able to respond to all of you (still waiting on the Glenn Medeiros info!), as December was a very busy months for me, as January will be. However, sooner or later I will tackled the rest of your questions and send out a reply.
Recordings
Lehua Ka'apana Nash, Ki Ho'alu Kaapana Style (Jus' Press records JPCD 003). Oh boy! I love Ledward Ka'apana's slack key style, and his sister Lehua's CD gives us another does of that Ka'apana magic! Jus' Press is Led's own label, and he was co-producer for this very enjoyable CD. Lehua handles a lot of old favorites with dexterity and aplomb. In an interesting touch, she features a slack key version of Hapa's "Justin's Lullaby." To my knowledge, this is the first recorded cover of a Hapa instrumental. Other songs include Radio Hula, Pupu Hinahina/Maile Lei, and a number entitled Punahoa Special that sounds a lot like Ray Kane's Punahele to me. It just made me happy to listen to this CD.
Nathan Aweau, Center Stage (Hula Records CDHS-598) Nathan Aweau, stage musician for Don Ho, makes his recording debut in a catchy, well-produced CD that covers a melange of musical styles in 9 original songs and 4 covers: Hawaiian, reggae, hip-hop (found, amazingly enough, in the song entitled the Don Ho Shuffle), romantic ballads, and jazz. None of the songs are in Hawaiian, but. Songs include: Latitu, All This Time, Hawai'i Aloha/Rising Sun, and Cisco Kid.
Gail and Danny in their Lei O Na Mele (yes, that's the listed title. No last names for the artists listed on CD cover) (Lei O Na Mele Inc. 001). This brother-sister team originally from Kaua'i have a lush, old-fashioned style. Gail reminds me a bit of Emma Veary. Songs include Lei Aloha Lei Makamae (original Hawaiian wedding song), Ke Kali Nei Au (the Hawaiian Wedding Song), Kupa Landing, Waipio, Wheeha, Pua Olena, and the Kamehameha Waltz.
