How this page works: every two weeks I list the latest Hawaiian music CD releases, and the Hawaiian music concerts for the ensuing two week period around the world. I also list new concerts that I hear of, no matter when they are, to give those of you out there a "head's up" to get those front row seats. (g) If you're looking for other concerts, or for gigs, you can use the Dakine Online link at the bottom of my page. The concert season is just waking up, but oh, do we have some choice opportunities! Check out the Kahauanu Lake Trio reunion (and lots lots more!) below, as well as Ho'omau '97, featuring Na Leo, Dennis Pavao, fabulous new artists Kekuhi Kanahle, and more! There's a free appearance by Iz, the Makaha Sons and Darlene Ahuna in California -- check it out!
I recently got mail from a fan of Mahi Beamer's. Not to worry, info on regular gigs for musicians such as Mahi can be found through the link listed at the bottom of the page.
Every month I get requests from folks asking how they can get the CDs I list. There is an excellent web site for Hawaiian music at:
http://www.mele.com Auntie Maria specializes in Hawaiian music and has hundreds of titles.Recordings
Darlene Ahuna, Ku'u Lei Poina'ole (Hula Records CDHS 600). Darlene's second CD showcases both her sweet singing voice and her leo ki'eki'e (falsetto). The CD has a distinct flower theme, with songs such as Lei Liko Ka Lehua, Lei Hinahina, Lei Nani, and Ka Pua o Ka Makahala (the last two are particularly nice).
Baba B, Big Boy in Love (Fat Katz Productions FKP 2002). Baba B is indeed a big boy -- one of his songs is entitled "Iz, I Wanna Be Like You," but Baba has his own, upbeat, well produced style, with six original songs, including the title track and Over on the West Side. He also handles two standards nicely, Ulupalakua and Wai O Ke Ani Ani. A promising debut.
Willie K., Shower of Hits II (Round Island Records RIR 8656). Another anthology from Willie K -- look for it carefully, as it has the same cover as Shower of Hits I. There are fourteen previously recorded songs, including Nanakuli Girl, Here's My Heart, and Ho'okipa Surf Song, and one new song, Malamalama o Hawai'i.
Gabby Pahinui, The King of Slack Key - The Best of Gabby Pahinui Vol. I (Hula Records CDHS 578A) The master is back, with such favorites as He'eia, Pauoa Liko Ka Lehua, Kona Kai'opua, and Hi'ilawe. The last cut is an interview of the man himself! Gabby collectors will go nuts! (g)
