Early-February 1997

Aloha mai! Wow! The Hawaiian music concert scene is picking up with a vengeance! Hawai'i, California, and even Salt Lake City have great concerts in the works. This month's special picks are the Ho'omau '97 concert at the Shell, kicking off another year of wonderful concerts under the Waikiki night sky, featuring new star Kekuhi Kanahele, Na Leo, Ka'au Crater Boys, Dennis Pavao, and more! Another special event is the Kahauanu Lake Trio reunion concert - details below. March will bring not one, not two, but three Keali'i Reichel concerts at the fabulous Hawai'i Theatre Center. I even have a teaser for you for the June Aloha Concert Jam in Los Angeles. Remember, with this concert, you get the discount only *before* the lineup is announced! See details below.

How this page works: every two weeks I list the latest Hawaiian music CD releases, and the Hawaiian music concerts for the ensuing two week period around the world. I also list new concerts that I hear of, no matter when they are, to give those of you out there a "head's up" to get those front row seats. If you're looking for other concerts, or for gigs, you can use the Dakine Online link at the bottom of my page.

Recordings

Fiji, Born and Raised (Richoceht Records RCR 1001) The beautiful voice of Fiji is featured on a variety of song genres. My favorite is the stunning "Chant of the Islands," which has been getting a lot of local airplay. Other songs include "Sharing the Night" and "Misty Blue."

Kapena, The Kapena Collection II (KDE Records, KDE 2000). This is a collection of favorites from their last five CDs. Songs include "I'll Build You a Rainbow," "Kalena Koo," "Say You Love Me," and "Kalua."

Brothers and Sisters, Love Power(Kahale Music Inc., KMICD26003) A very well-produced CD, with an emphasis on popular religious themes. Over half are originals. Songs include "Love Can Build a Bridge," "Kona Baby," and "You're My Everything."

Akoni, Ku'u Aloha ia Mama (Hula Records CDHS 601). Akoni is a Kindy Sproat Falsetto and Storytelling award winner, and this CD features the sweet falsetto that helped him win the award. Songs include "Malihini O Waimea," "Waipi'o," "Pua Loke," and ""Aloha My Love."

Des and Bambu, Maui Style (Kaihonua Productions, SIAO 143). Des and Bambu apparently have a regular gig at the Maui Marriot Makai Bar, and this CD reflects that type of commercial Hawaiian sound. Songs include Maui Hawaiian Supaman, Pua Melia, Na Makani Elua, and Pua Lilia. Also includes two Japanese songs.

Myra English, The Best of the Champagne Lady (Hula Records CDHS 5602). A robust reissue of some classic Myra English. Songs include KHBC, Nohili E, Drinking Champagne, and Ku'u Sweetie.
