Aloha mai!

Wow! I didn't mention it last time, but I must say I am blown away by the travelings of George Kahumoku Jr., Dennis Kamakahi, and Cyril Pahinui this winter! They are *all* over the continental U.S. , in venues not commonly visited by Hawai'i musicians (Kentucky? Delaware?). Check out the concert schedule below.

On to the recordings!

Recordings

Kapena, Kapena is Da Crew (KDE 6000). I liked Kapena's latest, even though it's a smorgasbord of different styles. Unlike a lot of untested groups who give the impression that they think they're never gonna cut another CD and so load up with everything but the kitchen sink, Kapena's got the talent, the depth, and the attitude to carry the Cd off. Kapena's trademark harmony, as light and inevitable as sunlight, holds center stage here. Although the synthetic strings on a few numbers mar the overall quality effect, especially on an otherwise hypnotic "Rua Kenana," in general the tone matches the style and a good time is had by all. Standout numbers include the infectious Polynesian beat of "Maa Kera/La Banane," the upbeat Hawaiian anthem "Okie Dokie Makou," and the ballad "Punana Leo O Hawaii." Kapena is even one of those rare bands that does justice to their covers, here "Listen to the Music" and "Neverending Love for You." Good fun!

See you in mid-February- a hui hou!
