Aloha mai! Sorry this one is out a little late -- I was involved in the Ho'omau concert on the 16th and that pushed everything back (and wow! What a concert! Maybe the most chicken-skin moment was when 58 hula maidens filed silently onto stage during the middle of the Ka'au Crater Boys set, paused, and, without any announcement, launched into "Island Style." The crowd roared! Or was it the thrill of hearing Kekuhi Kanahele live? Or Dennis and Nedward? Or -- well, ahem, let's launch into mid-February already, shall we?).Note that I'm announcing a lot of tour info this time around. If I don't list ticket prices, etc., it's because I don't have this info yet. I will be announcing additional info as I get it!
But first, for newcomes, this is how this page works: every two weeks I list the latest Hawaiian music CD releases, and the Hawaiian music concerts for the ensuing two week period around the world. I also list new concerts that I hear of, no matter when they are, to give those of you out there a "head's up" to get those front row seats.
If you're looking for other concerts, or for gigs, you can use the Dakine Online link at the bottom of my page.
Recordings
Billy Rodrigues, Brada B (Volcano Island Records VIR 7722) I found Billy's voice outstanding -- somewhat reminiscent of Keli'i Kaneali'i of Hapa in intensity. His two Hawaiian songs were very well done, Wailana and Poliahu. However, it was one of those CDs with a song from every type of genre, and to my taste, not enough Hawaiian, considering how well he sings it. His other songs are also well done, including Hall and Oates' "One on One," Jimmy Clift's "The Harder They Come," and a medley of "Babylon Rooster/Sexual Healing," plus four originals.
Ernest K. Puaa aka Da Barefoot Warrior, In My House (Ioane Productions and Studio EKP001). A well-produced selection of Hawaiian, Jawaiian, and contemporary island music. Songs include the Rev. Dennis Kamakahi's Kou Aloha Mau a Mau," Billy Kaui's "Mr. Reggae," "Over the Rainbow," and four original songs by Braddah Ernest, who plays five nights a week at Hula Grill in Whaler's Village, Ka'anapali.
Kaleo O Kalani, Never Been to Me (Kaleo O Kalani Records KOK 1011) The familiar harmonies of Kaleo O Kalani are back, with an assortment of songs showcasing their style, including Ku'ualoha, Honaunau Puka, Go Away Little Boy, the title track, and two songs in Spanish.
Ben Vegas, Walking in the Lights (Seraphim Records SRCD 9701) Ben was the lead singer, I believe, in the short-lived group 505 (remember Pua Nani?), and has just released his first CD, with eight original tunes. Songs include Island Celebration, Maile Lei, Only You, and Lilinoe.
Sudden Rush, Don't Blame the Youth. The Hawaiian rap group Sudden Rush has released a teaser for their coming CD, Ku'e. This CD has two versions each of three songs, one and instrumental, one a vocal, for a total of six selections. The three songs are Don't Blame the Youth, Hawaiian Pride, and Concrete Jungle.
