Aloha mai!Aloha mai! Plenty of Hawaiian music concerts coming up! I heard that the slack key whirlwind Mainland tour with The Reverend Dennis, Cyril, and George was very successful -- people are already asking for a hana hou! I hope you all get your wish.
The news I announced earliest this year has come to pass -- KCCN-AM is no longer an all Hawaiian music format station. Lower the flag to half-mast in memory of a station that kept Hawaiian music alive and on the air during the time when, to quote a country song, "It was Hawaiian back when Hawaiian wasn't cool." Hawaiian music lovers on O'ahu still have KCCN-FM and KINE, but there is an unfilled niche now for lovers of the older style. I understand that Harry B. Soria's program and others are still running on the weekends, which is better than nothing.
But speaking of Hawaiian music, the great Maui Hawaiian music station, KPOA, is available on the 'net in live, real audio format. Check out
http://www.mauigateway.com/kpoa. You will particularly enjoy morning jock Alaka'i!
Yes, I did goof last time and listed Amy and Willie's concert as the 20th instead of the 27th. Mahalo to those of you who emailed me a correction.
This page is a little late because I kept waiting for some new Hawaiian music releases to roll in. Alas, none did, so I have no CD previews for you this time around. However, I understand that there will be at least one coming soon -- the debut release by the group Pure Heart. I haven't heard them yet, but they've been getting rave reviews. I have included their intro gigs in the concert listings, and will preview their CD for you next time around.
Thanks to all the folks who sent me concert information! I don't always get a chance to say mahalo, but while my memory is still fresh, let me thank Tula, Sean the bassman, Auntie Maria, Dennis, Tracey, John & Karen, Darrell, and everyone else who takes the time to pass along concert info.
