Aloha mai!I get many emails from people looking for particular songs. I help them if I can, and if I can't, I refer them to Auntie Maria at the Hawaiian Music Island, or the newsgroup alt.music.hawaiian. I'm happy to be able to pass around the word that Auntie has a new song search capability at her website! Check it out at http://www.mele.com.
Although this isn't straight Hawaiian music, I expect a lot of interest in it: Kekuhi Kanahele & Kaipo Frias will be giving workshops in hula and chant at the Bishop Museum in the coming months. For details, see:
http://www.interpac.net/~nahenahe/0299/kekuhipapa.htmlAlso, the date for Na Hoku Hanohano 1999 has be set - Sunday, May 23. Ticket prices have not yet been determined. You can now download the HARA membership application (as an Adobe Acrobat document) from the HARA website on NahenaheNet.

Cyril Pahinui and Bob Brozman, four hands sweet & hot(Dancing Cat Records 08022-38048-2) I dunno about this one. I've really liked CDs by Cyril and Bob before, but this mostly instrumental CD doesn't fit with the others. The quality is scratchy; the songs themselves aren't particularly memorable or distinctive; nothing stands out, either in technique, quality, or style. If you're a big Cyril or Bob fan, though, give it a whirl; I guess I just prefer my steel mellow. Songs include Lei 'Ohu (instrumental), Hawaiian Cowboy, (instrumental, with an amusing intro), LBC Slack Key (instrumental), Coquette (instrumental), and Hula O Makee (vocal), and Hilo E/E Lili'u E (instrumental). As always, the usual great Dancing Cat liner notes.
Dennis Kamakahi, 'Ohana (Dancing Cat Records 08022-38043-2) On the other hand, this is a very pleasing, well-put together CD by Dennis, with the help of his son Kawika on 'ukulele. A nice blend of instrumentals and vocal, many from David himself and Queen Lili'uokalani (a noted composer), including one each of 'Ike ia ladana (Queen's Jubilee). Songs include: Ka 'Opae (vocal), ALoha Ko'olau (vocal), Moanalua, (vocal), Pua Hone, (vocal), and 'Ohana Slack Key (instrumental). Includes the usual great Dancing Cat liner notes.
See you in early-March - a hui hou!
