Aloha mai!
I got some very nice email from a Portland promoter about the Keali'i Reichel Kukahi 2000 concert, which I'll share with you here as my concert info is still suffering from RL syndrome:
"Kukahi 2000 will be held on on Saturday, April 29th, at 7:30PM in Portland, Oregon at the beautiful Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. This is Kealii's only mainland appearance in the northwest this year. We have already sold over 1000 tickets, and prices are as follows: $50 Preferred Seating includes a pupu reception and a fresh flower lei, and there are only a few hundred available. More than half are already sold. $25 General Reserved floor and balcony seats are also available. Concert information is available at: kukahi2000.bigstep.com or call 503-972-3466. Email: classicisland@aol.com.
This show is a presentation by the Kamehameha Alumni Association in conjunction with classic island productions. Hawaiian arts and crafts, fresh leis, and Hawaiian heirloom jewelry will also be featured in the lobby of the concert hall."
On to the CDs!

This full-throated songstress makes an impressive debut in this CD produced by Troy Fernandes and Chino Montero of the group Palolo. Heli sings with assurance and style, and is able to pull off an authentic variety of songs from the chalangalang ("Kaulana Molokai") to the sophisticated ("Waikoloa"). The down-home material is the more lively, but all of it is competent, and the backing is mostly good, with only a little synthesizer creep every now and again. A singer this good, though, deserves the real thing. Her vocal quality reminds me most of Melveen Leed without the edge. The only disappointing song is "Sentimental Reasons," which only seems so wrong as the intonation -- almost a parody -- is in such marked contrast to the other songs which are sung with such style. Songs include "Sweet Someone/Love," "Kalaupapa", "Aina O Molokai," and one original "Kapapa Honua". This is definitely a women to watch.

Don't get too excited, Willie fans -- this is not a new CD but a compilation of Willie's biggest hits. If you want a snapshot of Willie's career, however, you will be pleased, as this collects many of Willie's biggest all in one place. Songs include "You Ku'uipo," "My Moloka'i Woman," "Katchi Katchi Music Makawao," "Ho'okipa Surf Song," "Spirits in the Wind," and "North Shore Reggae Blues."
Concerts I'm still not caught up on the concert schedule and will refer you to the concert schedule posted on The Hawaiian Music Island at http://www.mele.com
See you in early April!
