Aloha mai!I delayed this page a day so I could include the Na Hoku Hanohano nominees. Please visit the 1997 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards site. Look for the Finalists link. Don't forget, the Na Hoku awards are coming up soon in May! You can also visit the Hawai'i Association of Recording Arts homepage.

Keali'i: There's been a lot of speculation lately about the direction that Keali'i Reichel might take after signing with Atlantic. I was contacted by Fred Krauss from Punahele Productions, who asked me to pass the following quote along:
- "people seem either misinformed or else repeating rumors they heard from so-and-so.... Atlantic will just be manufacturing and distributing Keali'i's CDs. They have no intention of "changing" the music OR the man. We are still Punahele Records, hopefully now with a larger audience. The potential and the responsibilities are great for ALL who love Hawaiian music."
I've also heard that Keali'i will be scheduling some California dates in April. I'll keep you all posted!
Good news! The Waiki'i Music Festival is back, and what a star-studded lineup! Details below. I am also pleased to announce the first of the Hawaiian music concerts at the Academy of Arts for this year (I was not able to get future lineups, but am told that they are in the works).
I've got some good new releases to report on this time around, as well as lots of music, both small kine appearances and big concerts in Hawai'i and on the Mainland. Thanks to all of the folks who've dropped me a line with info on the concerts they're promoting (Aloha, Andy and Rick!), and those who just want to say hi.
One note for those of you who are enjoying the Brada B CD: it will be the final release on Volcano Island Records. The owner has sold the trademark and logo to BMG in New York for their new Volcano Records. The new label for "our" Volcano Island Records is "Po'alima Records, with its first release from Bruddah Walta Aipolani shceduled to come out June 1st thru Navarre Distribution.
But first, for newcomers, this is how this page works: every two weeks I list the latest Hawaiian music CD releases, and the Hawaiian music concerts for the ensuing two week period around the world. I also list new concerts that I hear of, no matter when they are, to give those of you out there a "head's up" to get those front row seats.
-- I *don't* list every concert every time -- takes up too much bandwidth. You can check my back pages for other concerts, or the Dakine Online link at the bottom of my page. Recordings
Vaihi, Puko'a Kani 'Aina (Moon Surfer Records MS 9004) This vocal offering is a treat. Lots of harmony, a la Ho'okena, with enough originality to keep you guessing. "La'ie" starts off with a chant, as a number of songs do these days; however, it's a particularly effective one. "Kolohe Time" is a rascally song with each singer taking turns trying to trump the other. "Moment by Moment," a duet featuring Lina Naipo of Na Waiho'olu'u o ke Anuenue, seems destined to be an island radio hit. Other songs include "Pili Kaua" and "Kamakanaokalani."
Omi, Ho'ina (Kani'alu Productions KPCD-0001) This is a tasty offering with particularly impressive slack key and steel guitar accompaniment. Omi's voice is average but he delivers his songs with appeal. A nicely balanced CD with a lot of Hawaiian elements: the opening song, Makali'i, begins with an evocative chant. Othe songs include Waipi'o Valley Song, Koke'e, Lei Ko'ele, Thinking of You, and Ho'ina.
The Best of Tihati, "The Legend of Kalua," (Tihati Productions CD 1001). I was pleasantly surprised by the energy and polish of this CD. It includes songs from Hawai'i, Tahiti, and the Cook Islands. The vocals are well done and the instrumentals quite exciting, especially in songs like the "Cook Island Drum Dance." Some of it's a little slick, but there's a lot that's exciting. Songs include Le Otea, Mahatea 'E, Love Song of Kalua, Kawika/Kalakaua, We Are Family, and Le Toere.
