Keali'i Reichel concert *rescheduled*: The May 17 concert at U.C. Irvine has been rescheduled to July 9. See details below.

But first, for newcomers, this is how this page works: every two weeks I list the latest Hawaiian music CD releases, and the Hawaiian music concerts for the ensuing two week period around the world. I also list new concerts that I hear of, no matter when they are, to give those of you out there a "head's up" to get those front row seats. [g] -- I *don't* list every concert every time -- takes up too much bandwidth. You can check my back pages for other concerts, or the Dakine Online link at the bottom of my page.

Recordings

cover Amy Gilliom with Willie K, Hawaiian Tradition(Mountain Apple MACD 2042) Whew! Amy blows the possibility of a sophomore slump out the window with this stylish CD. Her robust songbird voice, a cross between Darlene Ahuna's fluid soprano mixed in with some of Kekuhi Kanahele's guts, delivers a great selection of tunes (most of them original), *all* in Hawaiian (wow -- maybe she and Kekuhi can start a trend here!). The instrumentation varies, between slack key, steel, a touch of piano, and some unmistakable Willie K licks, all without disturbing the overall mood of the CD. I think Hawaiian music purists will like this one a *lot*. Songs include I Ali'i No 'Oe, Hale'iwa Hula, Hale Ali'i O Waimaka, I Ka 'Aina Kaulana, and Hanaiali'i Nui La Ea. Visit her website for more audio clips at http://www.interpac.net/~nahenahe/amy/

BB Shawn, Live and Kickin (Flying Solo Music FSM 001). This live CD showcases many facets of BB's talent, including Hawaiian music. He plays Mauna Loa Slack Key with authority and panache, and delivers a solid Sweet Lady of Waiahole. He also plays a lot of local favorites, including a tender Tears in Heaven that's getting a lot of local airplay, Stir it Up, Jambalaya, and Hotel California.

Black Point, Kumuhau (Stoneriver Records SR1313). A contemporary group playing a variety of songs, including Pua Lilia, the title track, Windward Side, I Can't Tell You Why, John Crow, and a dance version of Mustang Sally.

The Brothers Cazimero, 20 Years of Hoku Award Winning Songs (Mountain Apple MACD 2040) This is a concept CD. The Brothers Cazimero have re-recorded twenty of the Songs of the Year of the Na Hoku Hanohano awards -- the equivalent to Hawai'i's Grammy awards -- in their own style. They "Cazimerize" Opihi Man, Honolulu City Lights, Hawaiian Eyes, Lei Pikake, Goodtime Together, Poliahu, and a host of others. Those of you who prefer the original artists may find this offputting, but Brothers fans may find it their cup of tea.

Anuenue, North Shore Dreams (West Maui Recordings WMR 6291-2) This appears to be an all instrumental CD in a contemporary style. Songs include Front Street Friday Night, He Wahine U'i, Yellow Bird, Moonlight Beach, and Kamakani O Ke Kai.
