Susan's Hawaiian Music Page
Early June 1996

Aloha mai!

Two hot ki ho'alu (slack key) releases this time, plus more summer concerts, plus some gig info, and a cry from the heart from a Hawaiian music lover in New England searching for like-minded souls to play. Check out the page this time around!

Before we get further, I'd like to mention a few Hoku awards that slipped through my fingers last time. E kala mai; I only mentioned the winners who were voted on by HARA members, not the special awards decided on by committee or the public vote award. They are:

Anuhea Brown, Lifetime Achievement Award
Sonny Kamahele, Lifetime Achievement Award
Ku'u Pua Mae'ole, Keali'i Reichel, Haku Mele award
Keali'i Reichel, Entertainer of the Year
Ledward Ka'apana, Bank of Hawai'i Slack Key Award
Justin Young, Kalaheo High; Matthew Swalinkavich, Aiea High, scholarship awards

How this page works: I post concert information as soon as I get it, so that you can use them for planning purposes (and yes, I've heard from folks who plan their trips around music events!). Then I list the dates again in the page immediately preceding the event. So if you want to know what other concerts may be coming throughout the summer, beyond the time frame for this page, take a look at my past pages (archived on NahenaheNet) at:

Releases

Reverend Dennis Kamakahi, "Pua'ena" (Dancing Cat Records 08022-38036). The Reverend is a familiar name to lovers of Hawaiian music, as he is a prolific composer of such famous tunes as Koke'e and Wahine 'Ilike'a, both of which are included on this album. The Reverend (yes, he's really ordained) has a smooth, masterly ki ho'alu style. The album includes instrumental cuts (such as my favorite, Hilo Rag) as well as vocals. People have been raving about this one.

George Kuo, "Aloha No Na Kupuna" (Dancing Cat Records 08022-38009). Dancing Cat must be bargaining on the current resurgence of interest in ki ho'alu to release two slack key albums on the same day. I haven't heard all of this album, but it seems as fascinating as the Reverend's. The cuts I heard were all instrumentals, but I can't swear that there aren't any vocal tracks. I liked the whimsically named "Golf Swing," "Mauna Loa Blues," and "Waikiki Hula Medley" a lot.
