Aloha mai! Now that the blood has stopped pumping (in several senses of the phrase) over the Na Hoku Hanohano results, it's time to focus on the summer Hawaiian music concert season. One beloved Honolulu tradition has announced its lineup: the AT&T's Wildest Show in Town series at the Honolulu Zoo recommences in June and goes through August. All shows on Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., and admission to the zoo is *free* after 4:35 p.m. Most of the concerts are Hawaiian music, and the dates of those concerts are:June 17: Pure Heart
June 24: Willie K
July 1: Palolo
July 15: Joy
July 22: Uluwehi Guerrero
July 29: Canoe Club
August 5: John Cruz and Friends
August 19: Audy KimuraRecordings
(all concerts are in Honolulu if not otherwise specified)Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, Iz in Concert: The Man and His Music(Big Boy Records BBCD 5904). The *biggest* CD to hit town recently was this posthumously released live concert CD. All but one or two songs have previously been released, but in studio versions. These concert selections include a whiff of Israel's infectiously cheerful and kolohe personality, as Israel introduces the songs and tells a joke or two. [g] It will bring tears to your eyes amid the joy to hear his familiar voice again. As one friend commented to me, the sentimental value of this CD is priceless. Songs include: "Kaleohana," "Marguerita," "Hawai`i '78," "'Opae E," "Ahi Wela," "Maui Hawaiian Suppa Man," and "Kamalani." I don't have sound clips for this one, but you can find three at the Hawaiian Music Island as http://www.mele.com. Click on the new releases button and then select the CD.
Nathan Aweau, One More Road(Hula Records International CDHRI-1006). This is Nathan's second solo effort, and like the first (with its infectitous "Latitu"), he brings polished, superior vocals, well-crafted instrumentals, and true musical talent (the CD includes 8 originals) to the CD. Songs run to the contemporary, with Akaka Falls thrown in as a sop to the Hawaiian music lovers. A very nice job, just not my personal cup of tea due to its contemporary flavor. If that's to your tatse, however, I think you'd find this one very rewarding. Songs include the title track, "Road to Hana," the catchy "Morning Light," "You Say My Eyes Are Beautiful," "Now and Forever" (the Richard Marx song also done by Keali'i Reichel on Lei Hali'a), and "I'm Not Supposed to Love You Anymore."
