| Sad news for all lovers of Hawaiian music: Israel Kamakawiwo'ole passed away due to respiratory failure on June 26, 1997. He was 38. The world is the poorer for the loss of this generous, warm, kolohe, big-hearted, and immensely talented, but Israel himself is free of his earthly bonds at last. Aloha 'ia 'oe, e Israel. Poina'ole 'ia 'oe.

Aloha mai!Summer's warming up, with a lot of new concert announcements, such Na Leo Pilimehana's first San Diego appearance, Keali'i Reichel at a benefit lu'au, and a rare Honolulu appearance by slack key master John Keawe! Also -- don't forget the C&K Reunion concert! See details below.
I'd like to thank all of the folks who took the time to send me email and agree with me about the wonderful music of Kekuhi Kanahele. Onipa'a!
...and speaking of email, please note that my email address is susanj@lava.net --Susan with a "j". I have received a very polite note from "susan" (no j) at lava.net who has been getting a lot of my mail over the past three months. At least, I'm pretty sure that it's mine, as she says that it has to do with Hawaiian music. She has not been forwarding it to me, so if I haven't responded to some of your email, it may well be because I never received it. ...remember, Susan with a j!

Kanilau, Kanilau III(Nani Lawai Records 0333) Kanilau's latest CD utilizes all the group's talents to their greatest extents, making this the best balanced of their albums. The songs are basically traditional Hawaiian, updated with snappy instrumentals, close harmonies, and Alapa'i's lovely husky voice. Some favorites include Ka'u Nui, done in a finger-snapping, jazzy tempo; Mary Kawena Pukui's Hanauma in sassy style (don't forget to listen to the dialog at the end!), and the soothing Nani Ka'ala/Kalena Kai. The non-Hawaiian songs Cuando Caliente El Sol and For the Love of You are added for some variation, but the album hangs together well as a whole.
