I know this comes a little late, but new Hawaiian music concert info hits my in-basket every day! I finally had to cut it off and just get this page out. Stay tuned in July for more concert info!
Meanwhile, you'll be thrilled by all the concerts coming and going! In the next few weeks we'll see the Aloha Concert Jam in Long Beach, Peter Moon's classic Blue Hawaiian Moonlight, the KCN Birthday Bash, the AT&T Wildest Show in Town series, and the Waiki'i Festival, as well as individual concerts by Keola Beamer, Don Ho, Willie K and Amy, George Winston and Led Ka'apana, and lots more. Thanks to all of you who keep me up-to-date on the concerts in your neighborhood! Just remember - my email address is susanj@lava.net - don't forget the "j"! The woman who has plain old susan at lava.net does not appreciate receiving my mail.
I was told by a very reliable source in Punahele Productions to be on the lookout for a *very special* Keali'i Reichel concert in Honolulu, around the last week in October. Stay tuned - this promises to be a very exciting event!
Recordings
Irmgard Aluli and Puamana, From Irmgard with Love(Mountain Apple MACD 2049). The splendid voices of Puamana (Aunty's daughters Mihana Souza, 'A'ima McManus, and niece Luana McKenny) combine with the tried and true voice of one of Hawai`i's treasured Aunties to produce a classic Hawaiian music recording. The Puamana Trio brings the rich, three-part harmonies typical of the golden age of Hawaiian music into the 90s with their lilting, melting voices. The simple background accompaniment of guitar, bass, and 'uke allows the voices to take center stage in songs such as "E Maliu Mai," "Kumu Kalidadidi," and of course, "Puamana.". Aunty's voice, with its patina of time, is heard both now and in the past: songs like "One More Round" (with piano), "Ka Waimea Swing," and "Maunawili at Sundown" showcase her today, and "At the Copacabana" gives us a taste of the young, vibrant Irmgard (a pity that no electronic genius could remove the crackle and hiss of the old-time recording format).
