Susan's Hawaiian Music Page
early July '96

Aloha mai! There are always a lot of great concerts in the summer, and this year is no exception! This page comes out twice a month, and I list the events in the coming two weeks as well as advance notice of all the concerts I hear about. If you want the advance scoops on other concerts, you can check out my back pages archived on NahenaheNet (see URL at bottom).

I was thrilled to see how many readers check out the info I provide. I hadn't realzied that so many of you were from Europe and Japan. While I do try to provide info on Japanese concerts, I don't know of any (alas!) in Europe, so I assume that many of you read this page for the recording information. I know of two reliable sources for Hawaiian music on the Internet: Auntie Maria's website and Conan Kodama's email music business (there may be others but I don't know them and so am not willing to vouch for them sight, as it were, unseen). You can reach Maria at:

http://www.mele.com

and you can reach Conan at:

kaleomus@pixi.com

Conan's catalogue costs $2 but is refundable on your first order. Conan also comes out with a newsletter at irregular intervals (hey, Conan! Still waiting for the March issue!) which is very knowledgeable. It's free with the catalogue.

The Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association (HSGA) has announced that they will be opening up a web page shortly. HSGA has shared some exciting information with me to pass on to you about coming events, including, for you heartlanders, their annual convention in Joliet, Illinois. Details below.

Recordings!

Ikaika Brown, Kalo Man (Pepeiao Productions PPIB001). Ikaia Brown is the prodigy of ki ho'alu (slack key). Only 14, he's been part of the Bankoh Ki Ho'alu festivals for at least two years. This first album is very nice, well put-together, all instrumental except for the title cut. Ikaika does justice to classics such as Opihi Moemoe, Maui Chimes, and Whee Ha Swing. An enjoyable album by a gifted performer, no matter what his age.

Andrei Nihoa, Medicine Man (World Blend Music CD 9509). This is an album of original compositions in various island styles -- a little reggae-flavoring, a little chant (Wailau Valley), a little comedy (Mister Pede Centi).

Na Leo, Island Breeze - Best of Na Leo (Sony Records SRCS 8005). Na Leo Pilimehana recently signed a deal with Sony (apparently dropping "Pilimehana" along the way), and Sony has issued a "best of" album highlighting some of their favorite numbers, including Friends, Java Jive, Rum and CocaCola, and (my favorite) Local Boys.
