Aloha mai!

Wow! I love summer! The Hawaiian music concert information just comes pouring in! Check below for the latest info on concerts by Keali'i Reichel ... Amy and Willie ... Pure Heart ... Hapa ... and more!

I post all the info I have for each concert. If there's additional info you wish to know (and sometimes I only get partial information), I suggest you call the contact person, if one is names, or the venue.

KCCN will finally release tickets for its usually sold-out Birthday Bash on July 1. However, when I called the station, they were quite vague as to who will actually be playing. [shrug] I finally pried the names of Na Leo Pilimehana, Kapena, and the Poi Pounders out of the woman I spoke with, but for the latest scoop on that, I can only advise that you listen to KCCN. Their standard practice is to announce "special guests" as late as the week before the concert, so again I advise listening to them at the ultimate scoop on the bands.

Roy Sakuma, noted 'ukulele teacher and founder of the Roy Sakuma 'Ukulele Festival held in July, has published his "Treasury of Ukulele Chords" book. It is supposed to feature over 800 diagrams. Book signings will be held at the following locations: July 18 -- Borders (Waikele) from noon - 1 pm; July 25 -- Borders (Ward Centre) from 2:00 - 3:00 pm; and July 27 -- Honolulu Book Shop (Ala Moana) from 2:30 - 3:30 pm.

Finally, KWXX radio in Hilo will broadcast a weekly Hawaiian language radio show starting this Sunday. The show, hosted by Makela Bruno, will run from 6-8 PM each Sunday evening, and will feature Hawaiian music along with other features, completely in 'olelo Hawai'i.

This page is updated twice a month -- come back in mid-July for more concert and CD news!

Recordings

Darryl Castillo and Kerry Okinishi, The Rising Tide (Sea-West Productions Hawaii SEA 5758-2 CD) This is a fun, catchy, contemporary CD from two talented guys. The tone is definitely contemporary, but it does have a few Hawaiian twists, like the beautiful slack key number, "Ke Liko A'ela," and the Hawaiian-themed "Liliko'i Lover" (packaged with a sing-along-version for the karaoke-inclined) and "Mr. Pole Benda." Crisp, clear guitar work, good singing. Other songs include "I Just Called to Say I Love You" (with a mild reggae beat) and "(I'll Always Be a) Hilo Boy." The only sour note is a credited "Hilo March" that is all of seven second long (what's up with that?).
