Aloha mai!

Good news for the many Keal'i Reichel fans: this all-too-rarely seen performer will be playing in Maui and on the Mainland in the next few weeks. Get your tickets now! I received some charming mail from a women who really enjoyed his Seattle concert, which I unfortunately appear to have lost, but from what I gathered, Keali'i's skill as a musician and performer just keep growing. You go, guy!

And speaking of Keali'i, he's also got concerts coming up in Japan and will be one of the fatured performers at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Millenium Concert on December 31st, And for those of you who really want to plan ahead, his annual Kukahi Concert will be held on Maui on February 12 and 13, 2000.

Recordings

Akoni & da Palapalai Patch, Kaona(Leo Nui Productions LNP-002) Akoni and his special gues, Aunty Lois Akao, present an excellent CD of the backyard lu'au jam variety. There's tuneful chalangalang on the ukes, plenty of spirited singing, and the general feel good, laid back vibe that nonetheless encompass good solid musical craftmanship. The CD contains old favorites such as "Ka Nani A 'o Ka'u," "Ia Oe i ka La," and "Na U'i o Kaua'i," as well as six originals by Akoni that fit smoothly into the genre. Originals include "Kealoha," "Waipi'o," "Pua Lehua," and "Ku'u Punahele."

Na Waiho'olu'u o ke Anuenue, Colors of the Rainbow (WayOutWest Enterprises WOWCD 9901) Nawaiho'olu'u, a three-woman group, has smartened and tightened up their trademarks harmonies and produced a honey of a CD. The Hawaiian songs, especially the gorgeous vocals on "E Ho 'hui" and the verty personal take on the classic "Kaulana Na Pua," are very well done. "Kaulana Na Pua features the great vocals, in a close harmony that almost sounds like a dirge, punctuated by the upbeat rap of Sudden Rush for a fresh look and sound. The group blends spiritual with reggae effortlessly in the beautiful "I Wish it Would Rain." Other standout songs include "Why You," with Fiji, and "Just Hold On," with a sexy little sax in the background. The group is close on the heels of Na Leo Pilimehana in style and quality, although some of the production values (tacky synthesizer) need to be upgraded to really be in that class. Nevertheless, this is going to be a hot CD, and one that many Hawaiian music lovers will enjoy.

See you in mid-August- a hui hou!
