mid-August 1996

Aloha mai! Some sad news this time out - the Brothers Cazimero are closing their gig at Bishop Museum after September 1. Their concert, Hawai'i from the Heart, is truly at home in the granduer of Hawai'i Hall. They will be playing Wednesday, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sunday until the 1st. Dinner and show or just show packages are available, for as little as $18.75 kama'aina rate. I would highly recommend checking this show out in the two remaining weeks! Apparently the Brothers are exploring the option of playing in Waikiki again, although nothing definite has been set.

How this page works: I list concerts twice: once, the first time I hear of them, and the second time in the page immediately preceding the performance. Please note that many times I get concert info way, way in advance. I don't post them in every page (my pages come out twice a month), in order to save bandwidth. While I appreciate folks who send me email with concert info, quite often I have already calendared those concert -- in previous pages. My back pages are archived at:

I suggest a stroll through them for you die-hard Hawaiian music fans who haven't seen them before -- you can also check out the past recording info in case you want to expand your collection.

Recordings!

Maui Serenaders, Mele Hula (Ui'lani [sic] Productions UPCD1007). Lots of traditional songs, such as Kokoe'e, Lena Machado's U'ilani, Waipi'o, Two Shadows in the Sand.

Teresa Bright and Kawaikapu Hewett, Ka Pilina (Generation Music TK2220). Teresa Bright's beautiful voice and that of cousin Frank Kawaikapuolani Hewitt join forces on this interesting album of original songs and chant celebrating traditional Hawaiian stories. Included are He Akua Malihini Pele O Ka Lua/ Mai Kahiki Pele, Hopoe (not the same song by composer Hewitt on the Makaha Sons' Kuikawa!), and Pi'i Ke Kai. Some will want this recording for the liner notes alone.

Clyde Halema'uma'u Sproat Sings ... Songs and Stories of Hawai'i (Pololu Records PPCD 195-1) I don't usually make recommendations, but I thought that this album was worth a special mention due to Kindy Sproat's warm, down-to-earth blending of songs in a beautiful, rich baritone, and the story-telling for which he is noted. Most of the album was taped in October 1993 at a live performance at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, and the album exudes a "talk-story" ambiance that I found quite winning. Songs include Kaulana Na Pua (with story), Sanoe (just beautiful), Pu'uanahulu, and Hawaiian Rough Riders.

Yuki Alani Yamauchi, Hawai'i Aloha (Respect Records RES-8 [Japanese import]). Yamauchi is a Japanese citizen who plays a good ki ho'alu and seeks to share his aloha for the music of Hawai'i in a traditional-sounding album. Cuts include 'Ulupalakua, Nani Kaua'i, Ou'uanahulu, and Hawai'i Aloha.
