Aloha mai! Welcome to Susan's Hawaiian music page! I list the latest Hawaiian music releases as well as Hawaiian music concerts all over the world. This time I have lots of listings for the Big Island, Maui, California -- even Texas! Hope some are coming your way!

I received a lot of email this month from people asking to be put on my mailing list. (This page is posted on the web and also distributed through email). I do not maintain the email listings: those are put out through the kind auspices of Ryan Ozawa, aka Prophet Zarquon, who republishes them along with news and sports of Hawai'i. If you'd like to get on Ryan's emailing list (free! great stuff!), please email him directly at prophet@aloha.net. However, don't forget to come visit the web site: I often have audio clips so you can sample before you buy. Thanks!

BTW, if you aren't in Hawai'i and you are looking for a place to get Hawaiian CDs, let me suggest you visit Auntie Maria at the Hawaiian Music Island, www.mele.com. She has a great selection and good prices.

Don't forget -- as mentioned earlier, the Ka'au Crater Boys are breaking up and are making a last tour of the islands. See dates listed below! I understand that they will also be doing a farewell concert in Las Vegas, but have not received the details yet.

One correspondent was kind enough to email me and tell me that one very special Hawaiian music CDs are now on the Top 50 best seller list for Border's Books and Music in *Michigan*: N Dis Life by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole is #28! Way to go, Michigan!

I have a special request this time: if anyone knows of any music or, especially, hula events on the Big Island from Nov. 8 through 15th, could you please email me at susanj@lava.net? Mahalo!

How this page works: I list concerts twice: once, the first time I hear of them, and the second time in the page immediately preceding the performance. Please note that many times I get concert info way, way in advance. I usually don't post them in every page (my pages come out twice a month), in order to save bandwidth. While I appreciate folks who send me email with concert info, quite often I have already calendared those concert -- in previous pages. My back pages are archived at:

My most complete listing, including concerts in September and October, can be found in the early August page.

I suggest a stroll through them for you die-hard Hawaiian music fans who haven't seen them before -- you can also check out the past recording info in case you want to expand your collection. Note: unfortunately, I lost some data on soem of the newest releases. I don't have that ready this time, but it will be available for the early September page.

Recordings

Leon Siu and Kawika Kahi'apo, Slack Key Praise (Aloha Ke Akua AKA CD-02). Well. I never thought I would be more than intellectually appreciative of a CD subtitled "Traditional and Contemporary Praise Songs played slack key style," (I usually find "theme" CDs heavy-handed)cbut I was just mesmerized by the happy, confident, and yes, joyful music that these two men have put together. Leon Siu is the Leon of "Leon and Malia," and Kawika released his first CD, 'Alana, last year, a quite well done CD that was inexplicably overlooked at Hoku award nomination time. This CD is sweet but not cloying, nahenahe but not boring. I bought it after a first hearing, which is rare for me (like I *need* another Hawaiian music CD in my house! [g]). Songs include "Jesu Me ke Kanaka Waiwai" (usually referred to as just "Kanaka Waiwai"), "Lokomaika'i," (Amazing Grace), "Nu Oli," "Shout to the Lord," "Blessed Be The Lord God Almighty," and "Hawai'i Aloha."

Kapono, Home in the Islands (no label data available). Henry Kapono, half of the famed C&K team, releases yet another solo album in his inimitable style. Henry blends contemporary and reggae influences to produce a very listenable CD. The title track has long been a staple of the Brothers Cazimeros, but Kapono is the author and puts his own stamp on an upbeat, driving version. "Isla" has been getting a lot of airplay, a gentle, playful love song, and some have tabbed "White Rose" as anothe rhit from this CD. Other songs include "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Get Together" (yes, the 60s hit).
