Susan's Hawaiian Music Page - early September '96

Aloha mai!

I was thrilled this past week to find out that this page was listed in the Hawaii Cyberscapes section of the October Hawaii Magazine! As this page is strictly an unpaid labor of love, I appreciate the pat on the back. I am helping to work on another Hawaiian music project that I hope to present to you in the mid- September page. Thanks for all the support!

How this page works: I list concerts twice: once, the first time I hear of them, and the second time in the page immediately preceding the performance. Please note that many times I get concert info way, way in advance. I don't post them in every page (my pages come out twice a month), in order to save bandwidth. While I appreciate folks who send me email with concert info, quite often I have already calendared those concert -- in previous pages. My back pages are archived at:

I suggest a stroll through them for you die-hard Hawaiian music fans who haven't seen them before -- you can also check out the past recording info in case you want to expand your collection.

Recordings:

Aloha Festivals 50th Anniversary, Hali'a Aloha "Treasured Memories". (Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center CDRHSC-1996). This recording features notable musicians such as the Kahauanu Lake Trio with Kaulana Na Pua, Nina Keali'ihawamana with 'O Kaleonahenahe, Olomana with Young and Free, and Peter Apo with Hawai'i Loa. There is a particularly nice, seven minute version of "Hawai'i '78" by the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau, complete with voice-over.

Peter Moon Band, The Path (Kanikapila Records KCD1017). A slack key guitar and 'ukulele instrumental recording with a wide-ranging choice of material, including Sanoe, Pua Lilia, Koali, Greensleeves, Nights in White Satin, and Slack Key Salsa.

Eric Gilliom, Into The Mystic. Covers a variety of styles. Quite well put together. Of particular note is A'O, a duet with Keali'i Reichel (Keali'i also chants in the song). Songs include the title track, Ka Makani, Slow Down, and Into Each Other's Eyes.
