Aloha mai!Mahalo to everyone who dropped me a kind line about my page this month. I've got info on a few new CDs, the latest on the new Keali'i Reichel release, and more concert info! I'm only listing concerts previously announced through early October this time around -- for concerts through December, check my early September page. However, I have added a few new concerts I've become aware of, such as the Kona Ho'olaule'a, a Makaha Sons appearance in Denver, a long-awaited concert by the Brothers Cazimero, and a planned appearance by Keali'i Reichel and Uluwehi Guerrero in San Francisco in February 1998 (get those tickets now! BB Shawn is a talented musician. I love his Hawaiian material but he's equally gifted at rock, reggae, and other genres. It was a shock to me when his manager contacted me recently to let me know that someone acting as though he were BB's manager was taking the liberty of cancelling gigs on BB's behalf. In her own words:
There you have it, from BB's manager: he's available, and now you know whom to contact. If you want to hear him live, check him out at the Steel Guitar Festival at the Halekulani, as listed below.
"It has recently come to my attention that there is a middle aged Caucasian man here in Hawaii`i who is representing himself as the "contact" person for BB SHAWN. I was enlightened when I was double checking my contacts for jobs that were to come up but were not yet confirmed. It was then that I had been told that they were informed by this man that BB SHAWN was "not available", "on the mainland touring" or "already booked". Through this man's actions, BB SHAWN has lost jobs, money and more importantly, the opportunity to do what he wants to do first and foremost -- play music and make people happy. This man has NEVER been, nor ever will be the "contact" person, booking agent, manager or hold any position in business or personal life for BB SHAWN or FLYING SOLO MUSIC (BB SHAWN's record label). To the best of my knowledge, this man does not represent ANY entertainer in Hawaii`i. I apologize for any inconvenience that the misinformation transmitted by this man may have caused. BB SHAWN has been in the past and is now represented solely by his Manager, Nancy Ishimoto. For future bookings or any information please contact me at (808)423-8489 or you can email me: bbit@hgea.org"
As promised, here's a little more info about Keali'i Reichel's coming release, Eo Mai. I've now heard that the release date has been moved to October 21. Last page I gave you a brief description of some numbers: here's a description from Keali'i's manager of another that I (being a great Kekuhi Kanahele fan!) can't wait to hear:
Rumor quashing department: Keali'i will NOT be appearing in Orlando in October. Not. This comes from his manager.
"Keali`i tells us there will be a slight departure in this album where he touches on the issue of Hawaiian Sovereignty. "I'm not a political activist, but I have definite ideas and goals from a cultural perspective," he tells us. There is a duet with Kekuhi Kanahele and written by Puakea Nogelmeier about nematodes. "The song "Nematoda" confronts those small-minded individuals in our community who find a lot to complain about," says Keali`i, "but who do nothing positive to improve things. Puakea compares them to parasitic worms who suck the life out of plant roots until the whole plant dies. I won't point any fingers, but there are a few people and organizations who might want to listen up." It's a fun song, with great guitar licks by guest artist Peter Moon, sung in a chant style by Keali`i and Kekuhi, with a strong message."
(Webmaster's note: Shortly after receiving this report from Susan, some of my operatives located the cover graphics for Keali'i's new CD, E O Mai. Just don't tell Susan, 'K - Keola)
Speaking of appearances, I understand that Keola Beamer's October 17 concert in Reno has been cancelled.
Last page, I notified you that Jim Corioso, who had a great Hawaiian music website, passed away. A family member has notified me that his site has been saved and transferred, and can now be found at www.ncentral.com/~colettab
Check it out.
Recordings
Nedward Ka'apana, Second Time Around (Lehua Records SLCD 7060). This is Nedward Ka'apana's second solo release. A former member of the famed Hui Ohana with brother Ledward Ka'apana and cousin Dennis Pavao, Nedward brings us another CD in the Hui Ohana style of old fashioned slack key stylings. Nedward's strength is in his instrumentals rather than his vocals, however, and unlike the Hui Ohana recordings, the vocals are solo, without the harmonies that characterized the Hui Ohana.
Robert Kekaula, Daddy's Little Girl (RAK I930). This is the second CD by the TV sportscaster, Robert Kekaula. I kinda like it [g]. It's one of these all- different-genre CDs, but it's well put together, with catchy, amusing song. Originals include "Uku Pau," a tribute to Hawai'i's sanitation engineers, and "Local Boy in Las Vegas," with lyrics by Star Bulletin humor columnist Charles Memminger. The CD includes some Hawaiian language numbers as well as a remake of "Candy Man."
Peter Moon, Kanikapila! (Let's Make Music)(MGC Records MGC 1011). Peter Moon joins forces here with Gail Mack, Jennifer Barber, Dwight Kanae, and Darrel Choy for a CD that highlights Peter's fabulous playing while showcasing these talented vocalists and instrumentalists. Gail and Jennifer sing their best on songs like "Kanaka Waiwai," and "Love is a Rose," while Darrell's sax adds moody mystery to "Ku'uipo i ka he'e pueone." However, the thread that brings these disparate songs together is the inventive playing of Peter Moon.
