Aloha mai!The neighbor islands are featured this month! The Maui Cultural Center was kind enough to get in touch with me and give me the schedule for their Ho'onanea Hawaiian music scheule for the 2000-01 season, which is included below. The Center's Ho'onanea Series is in its fourth year and showcases Hawaiian Music in a concert hall (Castle Theater) setting that still includes fresh flower lei, local crafts, plate lunches and pre-show hula performances by local halau. The link is http://www.mauiarts.org/calendar.

Recordings
Aloha Pumehana Singers, Hula Gems (Poki Records SPCD 9013) Lovers of classic Hawaiian music will rejoice at this re-issuance of this 1976 recording featuring kumu hula Darrell Lupenui, a very gifted singer who tragically died young and left few recordings. This recording was intended to assist halau by featuring staple songs in the repetoire such as "Kalena Kai," "Beautiful Kaua'i," "Hi'ilawe," and "Baby Kalae." Lupenui has a fine falsetto and the songs are handled well. In an interesting twist, kumu hula Chinky Mahoe, a former student of Lupenui's, has added three songs as a tribute to his teacher, "Nanea Kou Maka I ka Le'ale'a" (which was a signature hula for Lupenui), Mokauea Ku'u Moku," a song written for Lupenui for his entry at the King Kamehameha Hula competition, and "Honomuni." The addition of these songs blends in with the same classic style and adds a bit of historical perspective on Lapenui. Astonishingly, the recording is clear and crisp, with none of the dreaded "originally recorded on vinyl" sound. Kudos to Poki for a fine revival!
Bruddah Kuz, Talkin' Da Kine (IMO9592) This CD avoids some of the common problems with bands that basically self-produce themselves, yet it never quite hits the mark by carving out a special place for itself. The songs are well-produced and a lot of talent was used, but the 10 originals by Iopa Maunakea , while pleasant, make no lasting impression. The CD includes two Hawaiian songs, "Puna Ku'u Aloha," and "Pa'ina Piha Kealoha." Iopa clearly has talent, and hopefully his next CD will show a more distinctive voice.
